A tyrant treading on liberty? Or a liberator tramping on tyranny? You decide.

The Gadsden flag is an historical American flag with a yellow field depicting a rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike. Beneath the rattlesnake are the words: "Dont Tread on Me" – all in uppercase letters and traditionally without an apostrophe in the word ‘don’t.’

The flag was named for Christopher Gadsden (1724–1805), who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution as a warning to Great Britain not to trample the liberties of American colonists. This has led it to be associated with the ideas of individualism and liberty. It is often used in the United States as a symbol of distrust or defiance against authorities and government. As such, it has been adopted by leftist, libertarian, anarchist and far-right groups whose ideologies are often at odds.

A portion of proceeds from sales goes to Index on Censorship, a London-based non-profit that campaigns for and defends free expression worldwide by publishing the work of censored writers and artists, promoting debate and monitoring threats to free speech.
